The short answer: late May to early July, and September. You get warm sea, open mountain roads, long days and none of the August crush. But the best month really depends on what kind of trip you’re planning, so here’s the honest breakdown.
Season by season
Spring (April – May)
Green valleys, snow still on the high peaks, perfect weather for cities and UNESCO towns: Berat, Kruja, Tirana. The sea is still cool, but sightseeing conditions are the best of the year. Prices are low and sites are quiet.
Early summer (June – early July)
The sweet spot. Sea temperature reaches a comfortable 23–25°C, the Riviera and Ksamil are lively but not overwhelmed, and the mountain routes to Theth and Koman Lake are fully open. If you can travel in June, travel in June.
High summer (mid-July – August)
Hot (35°C+ inland), the coast at its busiest and most expensive, and August is Albania’s own holiday month, so beaches fill with local families too. It’s still a great time for boat days, Sazan & Karaburun and the Shala River are at their best, but book pickups and hotels early. For city sightseeing, start early in the morning.
September – early October
The insider’s favourite. The sea is still warm (24°C in September), crowds thin out fast after the first week, prices drop, and the light turns golden. Every tour we run still operates. Arguably the single best month for a trip that mixes beach and culture.
Late October – March
Mild on the coast (Tirana winters hover around 10–12°C), snow in the Alps. Theth and Koman boat trips mostly pause, but city trips, Berat, Kruja and food-focused days are excellent, and you’ll often have castles to yourself. This is also the cheapest time to visit by far.

Practical notes
- Sea temperature: roughly 22°C in June, 25–26°C in August, 24°C in September.
- Crowds: August is peak; the week after August 20 empties noticeably.
- Rain: November and December are the wettest months; summer rain is rare.
