Koman Lake & Shala River Day Tour
One of Europe's most beautiful boat journeys. We sail the length of Komani Lake, a flooded canyon of the Drin where the water turns emerald between sheer 1,000-metre cliffs, then continue up the Shala River, the 'Thailand of Albania', to swim in turquoise pools and laze on white-pebble beaches. A long but unforgettable full day, with an early start and an easy, scenic pace.
Itinerary
- 05:30Early hotel pickup
A very early start: we leave Tirana and drive north toward the mountains of the Dukagjin region (about 2 hours from Shkodër, longer from Tirana).
- 09:00Board at Koman
Arrive at the Koman ferry terminal, meet the boat and set off onto Komani Lake as the canyon walls close in around us.
- 09:15Cruise the Komani fjords
Glide through narrow passages where the lake squeezes between towering cliffs, with waterfalls, tiny hamlets and mirror-still emerald water along the way.
- 11:30Into the Shala River
Continue by boat up the crystal-clear Shala River, often called the 'Thailand of Albania' for its turquoise pools and pebble beaches.
- 12:00Swim, relax & explore
Free time to swim in the cool, clear water, sunbathe on the beach, or take a short walk along the riverbank.
- 13:30Riverside lunch
A relaxed traditional lunch at a riverside spot: grilled meats, fresh trout, local cheese and seasonal vegetables.
- 15:00Return cruise
Board the boat again and cruise back across the lake to Koman, with the cliffs glowing in the afternoon light.
- 17:00Scenic drive back
Begin the journey home through the northern highlands.
- 20:00Evening drop-off
Arrive back at your accommodation in the evening after a long, rewarding day.
