Short answer: yes, it’s worth it. The Koman Lake ferry is regularly called one of the most beautiful boat journeys in Europe, a flooded river canyon where emerald water squeezes between cliffs up to 1,000 metres high. Paired with a swim in the turquoise Shala River, it makes one of the best single days you can spend in Albania. Here’s how to do it right.
Where is Koman Lake?
Komani Lake is a reservoir on the Drin River in northern Albania, roughly 2 hours from Shkodër and 3 to 3.5 hours from Tirana by road. Boats leave from the Koman ferry terminal, reached through a narrow mountain road (and a famous single-lane tunnel) along the Drin valley.
How the trip works
The classic route is Koman to the Shala River and back:
- Morning: boats leave Koman between roughly 09:00 and 10:00.
- The cruise: about 2 hours through the narrowest, most dramatic part of the lake, the section people call the “Albanian fjords”.
- The Shala River: 2 to 3 hours to swim in cold, crystal-clear water, relax on white-pebble beaches and have lunch at a riverside restaurant.
- Return: back across the lake in the afternoon, home by evening.
There is also the Koman to Fierzë car ferry (the historic line used to reach Valbona and the Alps), but for a day trip the Shala River route is the one you want: the scenery is the point, not the crossing.
Self-drive or guided tour?
Self-drive is possible but has real friction: the access road is narrow and slow, morning boats fill up in summer, parking at the terminal is limited, and if you miss the departure there is no plan B that day.
A guided day trip solves all of it: hotel pickup (from Tirana or Shkodër), guaranteed boat seats, a guide who handles timing and tickets, lunch arranged at the river, and the drive back when you’re tired. That’s exactly how we run it:
Koman Lake & Shala River Day Tour, full day with hotel pickup, from €35 per person, fixed price, pay on the day, no deposit. Ask about the next departure on WhatsApp.
What to bring
- Swimwear and a towel (the Shala water is cold even in August, and wonderful for it)
- Sunscreen and a hat, there is little shade on deck
- A light jacket, the breeze on the lake is cool in the morning
- Cash for lunch and drinks at the river
- Camera or a charged phone, you will use it constantly
When to go
Late May to early October is the season, with July and August the liveliest at the river. June and September hit the sweet spot: warm water, fewer people. Outside the season, boats to the Shala River mostly stop running and the trip becomes weather-dependent.
Is one day enough?
For Koman and the Shala River, yes, one full day covers it. If you want to go deeper, the same region opens to Theth and the Albanian Alps: many travellers do Koman one day and Theth another.
