Tirana is the perfect base for exploring Albania: within 1 to 4 hours you can reach UNESCO towns, alpine valleys, turquoise lakes and the sea. Here are the day trips that are genuinely worth your time, with real drive times and what to expect from each.
All of these run as guided day trips with hotel pickup, from €35 per person, fixed price, pay on the day, no deposit. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and we’ll confirm in minutes.
1. Berat, the City of a Thousand Windows
Drive time: about 2 hours. Albania’s most iconic historic city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Climb to one of the Balkans’ largest inhabited castles, wander the white Ottoman quarters of Mangalem and Gorica, and cross the famous stone bridge over the Osum. The classic first day trip from Tirana. See the Berat Day Tour
2. Kruja, Skanderbeg’s fortress town
Drive time: about 45 minutes. The closest big-hitter to Tirana: the hilltop castle of Albania’s national hero, the Skanderbeg Museum and a 400-year-old wooden bazaar that is the best souvenir stop in the country. Easily the best short day trip. See the Kruja Day Tour
3. Theth & the Albanian Alps
Drive time: about 3.5 hours, early start. The most dramatic scenery in Albania: the Thethi Pass at ~1,700 m, a stone church in a glacial valley, the Grunas Waterfall hike and, in season, the Blue Eye of Theth. A long day and worth every minute. See the Theth Day Tour
4. Koman Lake & the Shala River
Drive time: about 3 hours to the ferry, very early start. Often called one of the most beautiful boat trips in Europe: a flooded canyon of emerald water between 1,000-metre cliffs, then up the Shala River, the “Thailand of Albania”, to swim from white-pebble beaches. See the Koman Lake & Shala River Tour
5. Shkopet & Ulëz lakes
Drive time: about 1.5 hours. The easiest nature escape from Tirana that most tourists have never heard of: two emerald reservoir lakes in the Mat valley, gentle kayaking, the Vasha hanging bridge and lunch of fresh river fish at a local home. See the Shkopet & Ulëz Lake Tour
6. Divjakë & the Karavasta Lagoon
Drive time: about 1.5 hours. A national park of pine forest and Albania’s largest lagoon, home to the rare Dalmatian pelican. Birdwatching tower, forest walks and a fresh seafood lunch. Ideal for families and photographers. See the Divjakë & Karavasta Tour
7. Sazan Island & Karaburun by boat
Drive time: about 2 hours to Vlorë, then by boat. A full sea day in the Karaburun-Sazan Marine Park: Albania’s largest island (a former military base), the vast Haxhi Ali sea cave and swimming stops in coves you can only reach by boat. See the Sazan & Karaburun Boat Tour
8. Tirana itself, done properly
No driving at all. Before you leave the capital, give it half a day with a local guide: Skanderbeg Square, the Et’hem Bey Mosque, the Pyramid, the Blloku district and the story of Albania’s journey out of communism. See the Tirana City Tour
