Albania has two UNESCO-listed Ottoman towns, and almost every traveller asks the same question: Berat or Gjirokastër? The honest answer: they feel surprisingly different, and the right choice depends on where you’re staying and how much time you have.
The short version
- Only one day, based in Tirana, Durrës or Golem: choose Berat. It’s about 2 hours away, while Gjirokastër is more than 4.
- Based in Sarandë or Ksamil: Gjirokastër is your town, about 1 hour away, and pairs perfectly with the Blue Eye spring.
- A week in Albania: see both. They’re different enough that neither feels like a repeat.
What Berat is like
Berat is the “City of a Thousand Windows”: white Ottoman houses stacked up both banks of the Osum River, facing each other across a stone bridge. Its castle is one of the largest still-inhabited fortresses in the Balkans, with churches, ruins and families living inside the walls to this day. Berat feels open, bright and photogenic from every angle.
Highlights: Berat Castle, the Mangalem and Gorica quarters, the Gorica Bridge, the Onufri Museum (€5). Time needed: a comfortable full day. Best from: Tirana, Durrës, Golem, about 2 hours each way.

What Gjirokastër is like
Gjirokastër is the “Stone City”: grey slate roofs, steep cobbled lanes and tower houses climbing toward a vast brooding castle, one of the biggest in the Balkans, with an arms museum and a Cold War-era US jet on display. It’s moodier and more vertical than Berat, and the old bazaar is excellent for crafts.
Highlights: Gjirokastër Castle and clock tower, the Old Bazaar, the Skenduli and Zekate tower houses, and the dazzling Blue Eye spring 30 minutes away. Time needed: a full day, usually combined with the Blue Eye. Best from: Sarandë, Ksamil and the Riviera, about 1 hour away.

The real answer
Pick by geography, not by ranking: both towns are superb, and the one closer to your base will always be the better day. If your route covers both Tirana and the south coast, do Berat from the north and Gjirokastër from the south, and you’ll have seen the two faces of Ottoman Albania.
